Strategic Plan

Media women vital in global financial crisis

Women in the media have a vital role to play during the current global financial crisis, according to Olya Booyar, President of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT).

"We must analyse and expose the failures of the system, record the harm in human terms and celebrate the success of women in a time of crisis," she told attendees at IAWRT's recent Regional Conference in Chisinau, Moldova.

"We must tell real stories about real people. Only by putting faces to dollars will we remind people that this is not primarily an economic crisis, it is a human crisis."

And she warned that women journalists and documentary makers should avoid reporting economic suffering in the "shock-exotic manner of the male-managed media", but in depth and with humanity.

"We must tell stories of women who survive and help others, who keep their families together and help to rebuild our societies," she said.

"And to build a world where the testosterone-fuelled excesses that caused the global financial crisis do not happen again, we must tell stories of women who have a different vision of economics and how to build prosperity."
