IAWRT INDIA CHAPTER REPORT 2007
The Delhi members of the India chapter met several times during the year to plan the Third Asian Women Filmmakers Festival, " Reflections: Women Imaging Realities". Given the success of the event the festival has become a regular feature in the calendar of the IIC and has wide participation from students of media institutes . This year we received over 55 films from India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Canada and USA. Twenty-two films were curated to cover the personal, social and political. The films explored the unique perspectives of women looking at self, relationships, sexuality ,family, traditions, politics , development and urbanization.Powerful stories, exploration of forms and personal expressive styles of filmmakers created a lot of interest as the films were breaking boundaries both real and imaginary. It was evident that women filmmakers are widening the frame. negotiating and documenting social and political events and issues of concern bringing in new insights into the ordinary events, challenging beliefs and views. The Festival traveled to several cities in India . The event was covered widely on television and magazines. This was the third festival that the IIC Asia Project has supported. IAWRT Philippines Chapter Report
History:
On 28 November 2006, one of the consensus among participants to the "Multilogue of Women in Peace, Governance, and Media", an activity funded by IAWRT International as part of its Strengthening the South Programme, is the affirmation of the role of media in the promotion of peace and challenging the Philippine government to exercise accountability and good governance. Participants also recognized the obstacles that hinder media to do its role as an effective agent of social change, particularly in bringing about positive changes in women's lives. Women in media lamented that one reason for the inability of media to effect positive changes for women is the lack of support in covering women's issues and concerns. It is in this context that the need for women in media to organize and to support one another came about. Eleven (11) women participants to the Multilogue took another step by responding to the invitation of IAWRT Board Member and Environmental Broadcast Circle (EBC) Executive Director, Elizabeth Roxas, to form an IAWRT chapter in the Philippines.
Activities:
In 2007, two more members were added. The group continued to discuss the formation of the chapter and decided to apply for SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) registration. The members were encouraged to continue the process when it was given an approval by the IAWRT Board during its Biennial Conference in October 2007. In December 2007, five members agreed to form the core group that will serve as the Chapter's officers and facilitate the SEC registration.
In the January 2008 meeting, members focused on organizational strengthening: drafted a criteria for membership, paid their membership dues, and proposed activities for 2008 and 2009 including a regular monthly meeting. On 8 January 2008, IAWRT Philippines' Elizabeth Roxas and Marlea Muñez were invited as presenters to the Conference on Education for Sustainable Development at Environmental Science Institute (ESI), Miriam College. Other activities for 2008-2009 include:

IAWRT NORWAY CHAPTER REPORT 2008 Total number of members listed is 33. During the year, we have recruited women journalists from other countries to join IAWRT and lost those who were peace-corps members
IAWRT and FOKUS The Norwegian Chapter is a member of the umbrella organization, FOKUS together with 71 women organisations with the aim of supporting women in the South. Gundel Krauss Dahl is an elected member of the FOKUS board. FOKUS is IAWRT's most important funder. Our present coordinator at FOKUS is Jon Rinnan, the only man at the office. Members have contributed to the FOKUS Magazine, Women together and the CEDAW report. Norwegian members have attended FOKUS meetings and seminars during the year.
IAWRT's international board attended the FOKUS Networking Conference on Trafficking in Cape Town, SA in August, together with our partners in India and Nepal. Norwegian participants were Audhild Jerdal and Kirsten Bråthen. At the same time IAWRT organised a regional meeting in Cape Town.
FOKUS - Forum for Women and Development, Networkers SouthNorth and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs were jointly hosting an international conference taking place at Voksenaasen, Oslo, Norway on 23 -25 November. The executive board members of IAWRT attended. The goal for the conference was to highlight the theme of women and gender in conflict and-post-conflict situations and the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. FOKUS sponsored our president's participation in the UN-CSW meeting in New York in 2008. Projects 2008 For 2008 - All FOKUS member organizations are obliged to deliver the annual report and the account to FOKUS within the 15of Marc 2009.
1. GLO-01/413-25, GLO Support of Women in the media in the South - global network building. This is the l IAWRT project money from FOKUS/NORAD to cover the proposed activities, such as the Web, the Biennial conference, the Board meetings, Regional meetings, Scholarships etc to strengthen members and activity in the South. For 2008 IAWRT Norwegian chapter has signed the agreement with FOKUS. We have a contract with IAWRT organization, signed by the President and the leader of IAWRT Norwegian chapte, to make both parties responsible for the project. For the second year the budget has been allocated out of Norway, to the treasurer based in the Philippines.
The international board and the Norwegian board have worked together on the new application for support of IAWRT-activities for 2009. The draft made by the president has gone back and forth. We expect the answer to come in February 2009. 2. TVA-IAWRT-Ind-91, Half Widows, Kashmir, a three-year project for women to be recognized as widows, women who have lost their husbands, started in 2006. The Norwegian Chapter has an agreement with the Indian Chapter about this project. Iffat Fatima is working with the local organization in Kashmir headed by Parveena Ahangar, leader of Association of Parents for Disappeared Persons (APDP). They are doing a great job under difficult circumstances. The Norwegian chapter managed finally to follow up the project with a project visit to Delhi only. For two years we have applied for visa to go to Kashmir, without being allowed. In November a delegation attended UNWGEID, UN working party in Geneva on kidnapped persons. UN has adopted a new convention condemning forcefully abduction of people. This is happening in Kashmir and other parts of India. FOKUS has allowed the projects to continue for one more year. 3. Trafficking Project in Nepal/India. Together with Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti, India, and Subhadra Belbase Nepal and World View, IAWRT Norway has worked on a one year project onTrafficking for 2008. The project works to sensitize what happens when the parents get money to let their daughters to go abroad and to send money back home. India makes the film and Nepal the other work. FOKUS has admitted us to continue for one more year in a smaller scale.
Activities:
For the 3rd year we invited journalists from countries where the press is far from free with sponsorship from FOKUS. We invited our member from VOICE OF TIBET to take part in the Global Investigative Journalism Conference. Kavita Joshi from India was invited to show her film, Tales from the Margins. Treasurer Elizabeth Roxas and Kirsten Bråthen attended. We got new contacts and members from different countries. IAWRT Norway held an open meeting at Free Speech House where we showed Kavita's film and Øystein Rakkenes' Breaking the wall of Silence. During this stay we organized meetings with relevant organisations and authorities of interest.
Closing remarks In 2008 most of our capacity has been used on the international projects and with FOKUS, and less on activities within the chapter. Realizing that this is important since FOKUS and NORAD are the main funders of IAWRT. We hope that we have inspired IAWRT members to link up with organisations in their countries working with the Norwegian FOKUS organisations. A list with the names of these organisations was distributed at the biennial conference in Kenya in 2007. We will have a discussion at the annual meeting to collect ideas from the members about activities of interest for the coming year. Two members have left the board in 2008, Carolina Maira Johansen for joining FOKUS on a project and Audhild Jerdal because of heavy workload. Members of today's board are Grethe Breie, Gerd Inger Polden and Kirsten Bråthen. A new board will be elected during the annual meeting.

The Norwegian chapter hoped to follow up the project with a project visit, but we never got visas from the Indian Ministry of Interior. We followed up after the Nairobi conference. No admittance to Kashmir.
3. TV-IAWRT-CMR-92, Combating Female Genital Mutilation through media, Cameroon, a one-year project. The Norwegian chapter sent two members on a project visit, Carolina Maira Johansen and Grethe Breie in 2006. They were impressed with the work of Madeleine Memb and Olivia Tumanjong. FOKUS has received DVDs of the two TV-programs distributed on the National TV. The DVDs were distributed to African countries at the Nairobi conference. Madeleine Memb and Olivia Tumanjong have applied for a 2-year project to follow up the successful work with activityof the local radio in the north, and to work together with a grassroot organisation of Muslim Women.
4. Together with Ananya Chatterjee Chakraborti, India and Subhadra Belbase Nepal IAWRT Norway will start a one year Trafficking Project for 2008. New members from Bangladesh will be involved.
Activities: *1. International Freedom of the Press Day. For the second year we invited journalists from countries where the press is far from free. Together with the Soroptimist, a sister organisation in FOKUS and supported by FOKUS, we invited two journalists from Moldova. One was our member, Alina Rado, the other, MariaSaharneanu, a member of the Soroptimists is now recruited. We held a seminar on 3rd May with FOKUS organisations present. We also held a combined VJ- and Freedom of the Press workshop in NRK. The two journalists were the Soroptimists and our guests for a week and visited media organisations and other organisation of interest. The Helsinki Committee, Norad and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took special interest in their visit.
* 2. The new 2007 Evaluation and Members Survey We have played a heavy role to have the evaluation done, an evaluation that FOKUS asked for in 2005. It was finally done by Sarah Helen Chiumbu, Zimbabwe and Anne Hege Simonsen, Norway. Finalized 1st March 2007. . * 3. Two members meetings were held during the first half year. During the last half, we had a meeting about Burma. The members from Voice of Burma showed a video about the demonstrations and uprisings and talked about the importance of Voice of Burma specially to spread information.
* 4. A news bulletin has been distributed.
* 5. Together with a sister organisation, Norsk Kvinnesaksforening, we have written letters to the new Head of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation and asked for a survey to be held about women participating in the programs in NRK in 2007.
* 6. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation is funding activities and travels for the Board members and Awards Coordinator to the Biennial Conference in Nairobi. By the end of the year, NRK has paid for the leader to participate in the board meeting and regional conference in Nepal. It also paid the stay for a board member. IAWRT Norway has access to a room without a window as an office. NRK assist with office- and mail expenses. We are grateful for this support from the public service broadcaster. * 7. IAWRT Norway has a good relationship with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been invited to an international conference and meetings to give input. We have given the MFA names of our members to participate in international conferences.
*8. IAWRT Norway had two persons at the Free Media Seminar at The Institute of Journalism. A good place to let other press institutions and media persons get to know about our activity Closing remarks In 2007 most of our capacity has been used on the international projects, and less on activities within the chapter. We know that the new project that will start in 2008 about trafficking in Nepal and neighbouring countries will be interesting to work with, but capacity consuming. Still we look forward to it. We hope that we have inspired IAWRT members to link up with organisations in their countries working with the Norwegian FOKUS organisations. A list with the names of these organisations were distributed at the biennial conference. The board has been extended with two new board members to make it possible to do more for the Norwegian members and be more visible. We have a plan to form a group of members to take care of activities within the chapter. It has not been followed up, next year!
