International Women’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.

In the Spotlight this week is the 11th Annual LUNAFEST FILM FESTIVAL, an international touring film festival that honors the talents and stories of women everywhere through a series of inspirational short films. This 90-minute program of films by, for, and about women is shown in more than 150 venues and to 20,000+ attendees throughout the U.S. and Canada. Taking place between October and June, LUNAFEST raises funds and promotes awareness for local women's nonprofit organizations through each screening.
Showcasing films of reflection and whimsy, hope and humor, grace and perseverance, LUNAFEST has become renowned for programming shorts that celebrate women. Their diverse lineups share the stories of women globally in communities large and small and shed light on issues important to women including health, body image, sexuality, spirituality, sports, cultural, and diversity.
LUNAFEST features amateur, student, and aspiring indie women filmmakers from around the world, and has a legacy of featuring some notable rising stars including Courteney Cox's directorial debut in 2009, THE MONDAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING. Exhibiting filmmakers receive a $1,000 USD cash award and the opportunity to attend the LUNAFEST kick-off premiere in downtown San Francisco, as well as local screenings in their area. MISSION AND OBJECTIVE
LUNAFEST is an international festival of short films by, for and about women, showcasing a diverse range of films which embody the unique, humorous, touching, and inspirational roles of women in our local, national, and international communities. MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Established in 2000 by LUNA, makers of The Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST donates 85% of the Festival's profits to local nonprofit organizations, and the remaining 15% to the Breast Cancer Fund. Since its inception, LUNAFEST has raised over $570,000 for worthwhile women's organizations, while raising hope and awareness for the stories of women everywhere.
Alum Lori Bensen (DEAR TALULA) sums it up best, "LUNAFEST changed my life -- it made me realize the power of sharing a story on film is limitless. This beautiful platform gave me the ability to reach out to women, and their response has been extraordinary…the letters, the emails are so heartfelt. To know that my story touched someone so deeply is truly amazing."
Female Filmmakers: for the chance to gain international exposure for your short film while making a difference, submit to LUNAFEST today!
