55th Commission on the Status of Women Four members of the Board (Olya Booyar, Elizabeth Roxas, Madeleine Memb and Supattra Limpabandhu) were able to attend the 55th Annual Meeting of the CSW in February 2011. In collaboration with IAWRT USA Chapter, it mounted a successful side event entitled, ‘Engendering Technologies: Women Take Charge’ on 24 February 2011. With the theme “Ways of Seeing: Rhetoric and Reality”, this articulated through multiple lenses the lives, events and concerns of our layered society and reflect how women go beyond manifestation to question and express new forms and contents. Newsletter Publication APRIL - JUNE 1st Board Teleconference Asia Media Summit An IAWRT delegation was present at the Asia Media Summit on 24-25 May 2011 in Hanoi, Vietnam. With IAWRT’s involvement in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)/ Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Gender Guidelines for Public Broadcasters project and in recognition of its expertise and credentials in the area of gender representation in media, the project has gathered a vote of confidence in getting this to the next level. The identified pilot group comprises: Thailand Broadcasting Services, Voice of Vietnam, Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation, Philippines Broadcasting Service, Radio & TV Malaysia and Young Asia TV in Sri Lanka. IAWRT members head four of the six pilots. Negotiations with IPPTAR and ABU On behalf of the IAWRT Board, the Secretariat was tasked to negotiate with Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (PPTAR) and Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) , arrangements for hosting the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference that will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 21-24 November 2011. JULY - SEPTEMBER 3rd Board Teleconference Implementation Workshop for the Broadcasting For All: Focus on Gender Project An implementation workshop has been conducted with IPPTAR, ABU, FES and IAWRT among six (6) pilot broadcasting organization, of which four are IAWRT members, to develop an action plan for this project. Terms of Reference, final arrangements and other details have been firmed up with IPPTAR and ABU for the conduct of the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference. Annual Project Audit Racheal Nakitare and Gerd Inger conducted the project audit of the FGM project on second of week of September. Newsletter Publication OCTOBER - DECEMBER 4th Board Teleconference Annual Project Audit Olya Booyar and Gerd Inger conducted the project audit of the Secretariat on the first week of October while for two weeks in India in November, Anti-trafficking and Half-Widows projects were audited. 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference Revolving its theme, “New Paradigms; Media Women Responding to Change”, over 60 international and 30 local participants gathered for the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference in Kuala Lumpur to discuss media's pressing role in obliterating clichéd portrayals of women in various sectors through the social media which is now seen as a powerful venue to bring issues across terrains not covered by the traditional media. This has also been a venue for celebrating the 60th year of IAWRT paying tribute its great women presidents since its inception. Five (5) of the fifteen (15) presidents came to grace this celebration with exhibit, audio-visual production and information materials distributed to participants. Members’ Meeting A new set of IAWRT Board has been elected during its Members' Meeting on 24 November 2011 at Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For the first time in the history of IAWRT that an African takes on the leadership in the name of Racheal Nakitare from Kenya, previously the Vice President. The newly elected board, with geographical representation from around the globe, has assumed its post and will serve IAWRT membership from 2011 to 2013, or up to the next Biennial Conference of the organization. JANUARY - MARCH 1st Board Teleconference IAWRT Participation to the 54th Meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) The IAWRT Board Executive in cooperation with some members in New York organized a very successful media event entitled, “Mapping the Women’s Role in Targeted Media on 4th of March during the CSW54 in New York. This session revisited Article J on Role of Media in empowering women as well as showcasing good practices that members engage in through documentaries produced by women about women’s empowerment. The IAWRT Secretariat was constituted in March 2010 and officially registered its operations in the Philippines under the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission. It will serve as the coordinating body providing administrative, program, information, and communication and networking support to the organization. The Board remains the highest decision-making body providing direction on planning, financial accountability, programs and activities of the organization. APRIL - JUNE 2nd Board Teleconference Asia Media Summit 2010 Four (4) of the IAWRT members joined the Asia Media Summit and led a workshop on gender guidelines for broadcasting organizations, which produced a draft code of ethics for gender mainstreaming in the broadcasting organizations. On June 7 to 8, Elizabeth Roxas, Treasurer and Head of the Philippines Chapter, represented IAWRT at the Asian Center for Journalism. There were about 150 journalists from 15 Asian countries who came and willingly exchanged knowledge and experiences and actively participated in various discussions and sharing on multimedia and social media, citizen journalism, use of mobile phones in reporting breaking news and other innovations to journalism that would help in meeting its present work demands and technology and in preparing for the future. IAWRT Scholarship A total of twelve applications were received, eleven (11) from Africa and one (1) from Asia out of the call issued to its members in June. The Board designated a committee who reviewed the credentials and eligibilities of all the applicants. Of the criteria (membership, area of study, geographical representation, pertinence of training area and program, contribution to chapters’ activities) set as guidelines for selection, the following applicants were approved with their courses: 1. Nakibuuka, Sarah (Uganda) – Creative Way of Writing of Informing People through Internet and Television Call for Short Documentary Production Entries The call for proposals for the 2010 Short Documentary Productions has been issued in June to all the members. With the theme “Violence Against Women”, members were invited to submit their entries on inspiring stories of a woman/women/groups confronting violence on a personal, local, national, regional or even at the international level. Of the total of nineteen (19) entries received, sixteen (16) for TV, two (2) for radio and one (1) for both radio and TV, 8 successful video and 2 radio entries were selected. JULY - SEPTEMBER 3rd Board Teleconference After complete turnover of website to the Secretariat in July, it has worked on determining how best it could serve the general membership based on its needs. It has re-organized and added sections on projects, activities, and publications; and updated information on chapters and members’ sections. Gender-Based Violence Media Advocacy Training IAWRT organized the Gender-Based Violence Media Advocacy Training for the awardees of the IAWRT 2010 Short Documentary Production Grant Series and the members of the Board. The pre-production workshop was held on 28 – 29 August 2010 in the Philippines. Regional Meeting in Asia Subsequent to the short-documentary pre-production workshop was the Regional Meeting in Asia held in Shangri-La Plaza Hotel where the Philippine Chapter showcased the Magna Carta of Women. Face to Face Board Meeting Annual Project Audit Gerd Inger Polden and Liz Miller conducted the project evaluation for the Anti-Trafficking and Half-Widows projects in India while Racheal Nakitare together with some members of the Norwegian Chapter took charge of the review of the FGM project in Cameroon. Similarly, Kirsten Braethen, Solveig Helvik and Caroline Rugeldal, all from Norway, conducted a project meeting with the newly organized Secretariat at its office in Pasig City on 1 September following the Regional Meeting that was held in Manila. Newsletter Publication OCTOBER - DECEMBER AMARC 10 Global Conference 2010 A number of IAWRT members were present at the World Association of Community Broadcasters (AMARC) Conference on 8-13 November at La Plata, Argentina. In attendance were Elizabeth Roxas (Philippines), Frieda Werden (Canada) and Lydia Ajono (Ghana) among over 400 community broadcasters and stakeholders from over 110 countries to explore strategies for community media development; knowledge sharing and mentoring; appropriation of community radio for social justice among other issues that were discussed throughout the conference. It is against the backdrop that “women gets less media coverage” that the international board of the IAWRT approved the theme ‘Media and Violence Against Women’, for the Cameroon Regional meeting held in Yaoundé on 26 November 2010. Discussions during the conclave centered on strategies for the media to stand in the gap and denounce all forms of violence against women and effectively engage in the promotion and protection of women’s rights. Website Training The Secretariat conducted a website workshop with the Chapter Heads and other members present at Cameroon on maximizing its use as a platform for information-exchange among IAWRT members.
