India

India's Chapter

The IAWRT CHAPTER India has been a very active chapter and has been working on several projects. The Enforced Dissaperances project now has visibility at the national and at the  global level as it seeks to bring the issue of human justice alive in the media through its monthly meetings. Short and long films are being made for discussion purposes and for wider distribution. The "Safe migration and Trafficking" film is being screened in many countries. The sixth Asian women's film festival , " Breaking Bariers: Shared Spaces" is under preparation, and has widened the scope to enries from Asian women directors, Student Films, animation, works in progress and retrospectives by women directors along with workshops. We also hope to include films that look at Asia from western eyes. The film festival has grown and is now traveling to many cities. The last five festivals have included a publication for both distribution and for educational purposes. The IAWRT collection of films is now housed in the India Intenational Center for viewing and research purposes.

The membership in India grows with many new young members who are academics, researchers, and independent film makers. Our members make make both documentaries and feature films .

Kenya

Kenya has been a chapter since 2003

IAWRT Kenya was registered as an organization in January 2003 following an IAWRT Regional Workshop held in Kampala, Uganda, in 2002. Nine Kenyan women broadcasters who attended the Kampala Regional workshop upon return founded IAWRT Kenya. In November 2005 during the 31st IAWRT Biennial Conference held in Williamsburg, North Virginia, IAWRT Kenya received its charter officially becoming a national chapter.

The Kenya chapter hosted the 2007 Biennial Conference and as a result grew tremendously. The organization has 47 members and 18 very active members. In 2008 there were many activities. On Press Freedom Day the chapter held a workshop, supported by Unesco, on the standards of women journalists in times of conflict. They have developed a publication on the IAWRT Kenyan strategic plan that involves the constitution of the organization and future opportunities.

Philippines

The chapter was formed in 2007

The chapter was registered in 2007. In 2008 the chapter was invited to Norway to take part in a conference on "Post-Conflict Situations." With the University, the chapter collaborated on a "Women Film Festival" and they showcased a film on "transnational motherhood."The chapter has conducted several trainings on women and the environment. In 2009, the Philipines chapters coordinated the short documentary IAWRT project.

Cameroon

The Cameroon chapter was founded in 2007.

The Chapter was formed in 2007 and Madeleine Memb is the head of the chapter.  Olivia Tumanjong is the treasurer. One of the activities for 2009 involved a training workshop for women on the role of journalists in the midst of International conflicts. This workshop was a big success. A new theme for the group will be to work on land conflicts and transitional justice. In the past the group has developed innovative communication projects to address female genital mutiliation in the region. This communication project is a model for other organizations working around the issue in the region. The group continues to promote the organization in the region. In rural areas they do work to "demystify" the media in the lives of rural women.

Nepal

Formed in 2006

IAWRT Nepal was formed in December 2006 through a consensus reached by the forty participants of a national conference on "The Role of Media Women in the Reconstruction Process." This national regional meeting involved participants from five districts around the country. The group was then governed by an adhoc committee of nine members. This committee was later officially registered in Lalitpur Chief District office in September 2007. The Nepal chapter received its charter in October 2007 at the IAWRT 32nd Biennial Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The next large meeting was an IAWRT regional meeting, "Women Building Peace" in December 2007, that involved participants from 18 countries.

The group has also developed a three-year partnership with Oklahoma university and have travelled there to take part in several workshops including "Gender Sensitive Visual Storytelling" and "Leadership of Women in Media."

The chapter took part in a preparatory committee for 3025 prepartory meeting and as a result the country now has a National Action Plan.
