DAY ONE: board managed to attend the two day Global NGO Forum
Despite the heavy snow and wind storm expereinced on 26th and 27th February 2010 in New York, the International Association of Women in Radio and Television board managed to attend the two day Global NGO Forum for Women held at the salvation Army Headquaters. That is not to say without travel dramas and anecdotes.
The two days deliberation ended in a call to action document which was handed over to the chair of the Bureau of CSW 54 , His excellency Garen Nazarian. The highlights of the call to action is a contribution to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls worldwide. The document read out by three young representatives seemed to respond positively to earlier deliberations which pointed towards the need for mentorship of future generations.The call for action is build on a 12 point agenda that would facilitate participation by countries, United Nations community and advocates for rights of women and girls everywhere.
As its contribution to the CSW 54, IAWRT has lined up a side event "Mapping Women's Empowerment through Targeted Media" on Thursday, the 4th of March 2010 at the Salvation Army on the 52nd street. The session will revisit section J on Role of Media in empowering women as well as show case some good practices that the members have engaged in through the series of documentaries produced by women about womens empowerment. Panelists will include Dr. Carolyn M Byerly of Howard University,UNIFEM's Nanette Braun, Kelly Matheson of WITNESS, MediaTtechnologist Deanna Zandt and IAWRT president Olya Booyar.
