2011 Mid-Term Report of South Africa Chapter

This year in May IAWRT South Africa was part of a major Pan-African live video link up which we helped co-ordinate along with the American embassies in South Africa, Kenya, Cameroon and Tanzania.
IAWRT-Kenya also participated in the link up and the intention was to link up specifically with IAWRT chapters in Cameroon and Tanzania. In the end, it was a mix of participants; both IAWRT chapters, women's groups and media practioners which included men and women.

What was also particularly encouraging was the participation of media practictioners in Zimbabwe. Reportage in the country has been difficult and there are continuous reports coming out of the country that some journalists are persecuted for doing their jobs.

Participants in the video were connected via Digital Video Conference (DVC). The Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Judith McHale, was the main speaker of the joint panel (bio: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/biog/124007.htm) as well as Khadija Patel, Editor of Al Huda Magazine and writer for freeafricanmedia.com. Respected journalist and academic Pippa Green was included on the panel and the chairperson of Associated magazines Jane Raphaely attended the discussion in Cape Town with our chapter.

The theme of discussion was “Women in media” and it saw contributions from around the continent as participants from different parts of Africa gave voice to some of the challenges that they face as women working in media. The discussion also served as a platform for solutions and there was a resolution that these kind of conferences must at the end of it, produce an action plan.
There was resolution to convene another Pan-African video link up with the aim of including all African IAWRT-Chapters. The idea is currently in the works and a date has yet to be set. The aim is to have another such link up again this year.

Please visit the link below to hear the podcast of the event and pictures.
http://southafrica.usembassy.gov/policy_mchale_women-in-media2.html

IAWRT-SA has also been in discussions with acclaimed film director and investigative journalist Liz Fish about training for members. To give you some idea of the status that Liz Fish enjoys, The Banff World Media Festival presented this year’s David Suzuki Green Producer award to her.

Fish began making socially conscious documentaries during apartheid in the 1980s, with her The Long Journey of Clement Zulu hailed as a landmark development in South African doc-making. She has shifted her work focus to environmental justice, producing work for magazine program Carte Blanche, as well as docs airing on African television and worldwide.
See link
http://realscreen.com/2011/06/07/liz-fish-to-receive-david-suzuki-green-...
Fish has been in talks with IAWRT SA about future training endeavour and we are in the first phase of those discussions. IAWRT-SA has taken a decision to equip members with technical skills in a bid to sharpen our ability to tell stories of influence.
Watch this space!
