2011 Mid-Term Report of Moldova Chapter

During the first half of 2011, Moldovan chapter had organised o few actions in order to promote women rights in Radio an TV.

In February, Alina Radu, chapter head, had produced and presented on Publict TV „Moldova1” the documentary „The jail from the brothel”, about women trafficking in Moldova. The screening creted a debate in the Governmental structures responsable for combating trafficking and victims of traficling that were shown in the film got more attention from NGO and social help organizations,

In March, a debate was organised in Moldovan Parliament on the situation of women involved in politics. Alina Radu was invited to speak about women in media. The shrot 5 minutes docu done by IAWRT support „Affected by inequality” was screened at the meeting folowed by a debate about how to make participation of women in politics more visible.

In April the society in Moldova discussed a lot about rights of Moldovan Roma populations. The IAWRT members in Moldova decided to pay special attention to Roma Women. IAWRT member Tatiana Etco did a great video story named „Roma women in Moldova”, in partnership with AED and UN.

In May, during media days, Aneta Grosu and Tatiana Etco partidipated in a Press Exibition of Moldovan media done on 5th of May in the central park of Chisinau, capital city. Moldovan IAWRT members participated in the press exibition with a collection of press materials about situation of women and children and their social situation in Moldovan society. The exibition was highly appreciated and many media reports were presented in moldovan media about the exibition.

In June Moldova had local general elections. Most of IAWRT Moldova members were involved in production of programs about promoting women in local elections for positions of mayours and local councilors. Maria Saharneanu did special programs on radio „Vocea Basarabiei”. Alina Radu and Aneta Grosu conducted a young student from Advanced Journalism School, Olga Bulat, to make a short documentary „Women in Moldova. Whom do we elect?”. The documentary was screened on Moldovan public TV.

In June, Tatiana Etco, member of IAWRT, participated in the Festival of Local TV in Kosice, Slovakia with 2 films done by Moldovan IAWRT members: „Life as a Gulag” – about women deported to Siberia in Soviet Era, done by Tatiana Etco, and „The Jail from the Brothel”, about women trafficking.

On 1st of July 2010, Moldova honored the first independent News TV Program in Moldova. It was 20 years ago, just same date when Moldova as a country appeared on the map. The first free news program was as much appreciated by people, that after 2 years a street in Moldovan capital was named after the name of this news program: Mesager. Of course, in that great TV team were a few women who were reporting through harsh realities: war, unrest, poverty. And some of those women are still active in TV and members of IAWRT Moldova: Viorica Cucereanu, Aneta Grosu, Corina Fusu, Alina Radu.

IAWRT Moldova had few visitors from our IAWRT International Family. In January 2010, Gunilla Ivarsson, former Secretary visited Moldova to share with the new Secretary all experiences, dedication and patience in doing secretary activities, In April, Inghela Ekblom, of Swedish Radio and the Chapter's Swedish IAWRT colleague visited them. Beside the discussion of possible IAWRT Moldova and Swedish Radio common project, an idea of helping women broadcasters from National TV in Moldova was also raised.

The first IAWRT Moldova half of the year passed very quickly. They kept going and encouraging younger colleagues to apply and join the Chapter membership.
