2011 Mid-Term Report of Norway Chapter

The Norwegian Chapter celebrated Women´s Day, 8th of March with an Open meeting in NRK addressing the results of the Global Media Monitoring Project, showing that 81% of the experts used by the media in Norway are men. IAWRT member, Kristin Orgeret lecturer at the Journalist education in Oslo, presented the Norwegian results. Media researcher in NRK, Hilde Thoresen, presented results from NRK´s own monitoring. A panel with the Programme Director in NRK, and three women lecturers/researchers, discussed how to augment the participation of women experts in the media. As a result of the meeting we recruited two new members.

On March 7th the Chapter was invited by NORAD to open their new venue for The Development House in Oslo, with one day of screening IAWRT films. We presented the Trafficking project and screened one of the 30 min. documentaries, and the documentation of the workshop, together with the anti-trafficking spots. NORAD is interested in further cooperation.

In March we also held our annual meeting, with election of new members to the board.

We have negotiated cooperation with The Film from South International Festival in Oslo. This autumn Ananya Chakraborti, will present her FOKUS/IAWRT project film Understanding Trafficking during the Festival. This is funded with an extra information funding from FOKUS. The Norwegian Chapter also applied to FOKUS for travel scholarship for international board member, Madeleine Memb, to attend CSW in New York.

We have assisted the Secretariat and the President in writing and delivering the 2010 written and financial report to FOKUS, as well as revising the application for 2011, and sending the first part of the 2011 grant to the Secretariat.

One of our members have been on the committee working with new Statutes for IAWRT.

Four Norwegian IAWRT Members present at the Regional meeting in Manila?

Four Norwegian members, Gerd Inger, Solveig, Caroline and Kirsten came to Manila representing IAWRT Norway Chapter to provide guidelines to the recently established Secretariat. Norway Chapter is responsible in ensuring that the project funds approved by Fokus and the Norwegian Development Assistance (NORAD) are disbursed accordingly. That also gives context to why Gerd Inger is co-opted to the International Board.

Thanks to Gundel Krauss Dahl for paving the way in establishing a relationship with NORAD. When she was President some years ago, she contacted NORAD and was advised to approach FOKUS, the umbrella organization for women’s organizations. Even before chapters were approved at the Biennial Conference in 2005, the Norwegian members were organized in a chapter to become a member of FOKUS. After that, IAWRT has had FOKUS support for our activities. The Project Meeting that we had with the International Board, is the way FOKUS keeps track of what the organization is doing. Unfortunately, only Elizabeth, the Treasurer and Head of the Secretariat was present from the International Board. It should have been a wider representation, and it will be next time.

This year, FOKUS has introduced a new way of organizing the budget and the funding of the earlier projects. Half widows, Anti-Trafficking and FGM have been considered projects direct under the Norwegian Chapter, but from 2010 they are activities under the International Board. The Project meetings for the Half Widows, Trafficking and FGM are held with one person from the International Board and one from the Norwegian Chapter together with those working with the issues.

Thanks to FOKUS´ interest in our network, IAWRT is developing its activities. For the first time, we have a Secretariat to assist the International Board, Chapters and individual members. They were present at the Project Meeting and had their words and input.

We in Norway have found that the best way to learn from our activities is by meeting our members and see the activities. The two last years we have elected new young Chapter Board members. The Chapter Board members need to get to know all the activities that the Norwegian Chapter has to answer for towards FOKUS. The Regional meetings give us a good opportunity to meet members, listen to their views and learn to know about IAWRT´s activities and the situation for women in the area.

The International Board decided that the Norwegian Chapter should be present at the Regional meeting, to have the Project Meeting with IAWRT and to meet the people in the Secretariat. The members of the Norwegian Delegation were the new Treasurer, Solveig Helvik, new Board member Caroline Rugeldal, and Kirsten Bråthen, Board member and former Chapter Head.

Next year the Biennial conference will take place and Fokus/NORAD will make this possible by covering the travel cost for the International Board, the Chapter Heads and 10 members. Our partnership with FOKUS is the main reason for IAWRT to be able to run all the good activities for the members. Members mainly in the South are benefiting the most. We in the Norwegian Chapter hope that IAWRT will work to have funders from other countries, to ensure that our activities can expand in the future.

Gerd Inger Polden heads the Norway Chapter. To date, there are 38 members in the Norwegian Chapter and it receives in-kind support from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Over the last two years, the organization has managed two film advocacy projects, "The Half Widows" and the "Anti-Trafficking ." The Norway chapter helps to facilitate the relationship with IAWRT's primary funder, Fokus. In 2008, the group brought an IAWRT member from the Philipines to the "Global Investigative Journalism Conference." In 2009, the group invited an IAWRT member from Sudan to the "The Global Forum on Freedom of Expression Conference."

In addition to being head of the chapter, Gerd Inger also heads the Awards Ceremony.There are four members meetings each year and one board meeting a month. They hold open screenings for members to view work.
