2011 Mid-Term Report of Nepal Chapter

Programs conducted:

1. Nepal African Film festival

IAWRT Nepal partnered with The College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CJMC) for organizing the First African film festival in Nepal which was held from 23 to 25 May 2010. The prime objective of the festival was to promote quality films and encourage Nepali film makers to learn and discover African culture & lifestyle. The festival was organized by College of Journalism and Mass Communications under the Norwegian FK exchange program. IAWRT Nepal joined hands with CJMC to encourage and aware media women on documentary production. During the festival eight different films were selected. Six films from African countries and one from Nepal. Around 400 people had participated in the festival.

2. Development of Gender Guidelines for Television

We drafted a dos and don’ts for TV for gender sensitive reporting which was discussed intensively at a one day workshop with representatives from twelve TV channels. The guidelines have now been finalized on the basis of the input received from the workshop and is in the process of being published as posters for different media houses and launched at a special function to be organized with editors of media houses.

3. Developing Short term course on leadership for media women

IAWRT Nepal had conducted three successful workshops on women leadership in collaboration with Gaylord college of Journalism and Mass Communications in 2009 and 2010. This program was assessed to be very fruit full for women journalists. Therefore this year we are planning to conduct similar kind of course on our own. We are presently designing the workshop for women journalists in Nepal which we hope can be finalized by the end of August 2011.

IAWRT Nepal’s Work on UNSCR 1325

The armed conflict in Nepal between 1996 and 2006 had far-reaching impact on women, irrespective of whether it is women who joined as combatants, were related to men taking part in it, due to their residing in particular conflict affected areas, their own or their family members’ political beliefs or their ethnic and economic backgrounds. Socially and economically, girls and women became overburdened with responsibilities. Women became heads of households and solely responsible for their families as men and young people were compelled to leave their villages for fear of being caught in the conflict between state security forces and the Maoists. Women began taking up work traditionally restricted to men – such as ploughing and performing funeral rites. With increasing insecurity of food supply, women and girls’ health were threatened by inequitable food distribution resulting in malnutrition and severe anemia. Educational opportunities for girls further diminished due to displacement and fears of kidnapping, forced induction and being caught in cross fires. With little education and no skills girls were often forced into exploitative jobs. Incidents of sexual violence on women by both armed forces the state and the rebels have also been reported by various media. However women have been negligibly absent in all peace committees, task forces, negotiation teams and all other peace-building structures that have been put in place after the cessation of armed conflict in 2006. Against the backdrop the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR)1325, ensuring women's participation at all levels of peace building and their protection during and after conflict has been very instrumental to lobby and advocate with government authorities and political parties to promote women’s participation in all peace building processes. In this context, IAWRT Nepal has been able to organize and develop several programs related to UNSCR 1325.

Training Workshops

In collaboration with the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications of Oklahoma University, USA, IAWRT Nepal organized two separate training workshops for journalists from 11-14 January 2008. The trainers came from the Oklahoma University. The workshops were entitled ‘Leadership Skills for Women Journalists’ and ‘ Visual Story Telling: Best Journalistic Practices’. The first workshop was participated by fifteen women journalists from leading Radio and Print Media while the second workshop was participated by 15 journalists (10 women and 5 men) from different TV stations in Nepal. Considering the success of the workshops and the positive feedback from participants IAWRT Nepal has decided to organize similar workshops in 2009 and has initiated consultation with the Oklahoma University in this regard.

IAWRT Nepal was formed in December 2006 through a consensus reached by the forty participants of a national conference on "The Role of Media Women in the Reconstruction Process." This national regional meeting involved participants from five districts around the country. The group was then governed by an AdHoc committee of nine members. This committee was later officially registered in Lalitpur Chief District office in September 2007. The Nepal chapter received its charter in October 2007 at the IAWRT 32nd Biennial Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The next large meeting was an IAWRT regional meeting, "Women Building Peace" in December 2007, that involved participants from 18 countries.
The group has also developed a three-year partnership with Oklahoma university and have travelled there to take part in several workshops including "Gender Sensitive Visual Storytelling" and "Leadership of Women in Media."
The chapter took part in a preparatory committee for 1325 preparatory meeting and as a result the country now has a National Action Plan.
