2011 Mid-Term Report of Kenya Chapter

Introduction

IAWRT Kenya has continued with recruiting new members and partnering with like minded organizations in ensuring that women concerns / issues are addressed especially in the light of the new constitution which is in its implementation stage. To this end we have;

1.   New members include;
•   Catherine Achienga – Parliamentary Reporter and programme presenter
•   Naisula Lesuuda – Media consultant
•   Evelyne Kangai – Television Producer
•   Maryanne Wanjiku – Televison Producer
•   Daisy Onkoba – Student, Multi Media University

Individual members continue to line up programmes highlighting women’s concerns in the new constitution. The members include;
• Loice Wanyoke featuring women and the constitution every Wednesday, live, one hour on Radio 95.6 – English service .
• Maryanne Wanjiku on Goodmorning Kenya T.V breakfast show once every month.

2. IAWRT Kenya participated in the World Press Freedom activities organized by UNESCO and the media council. IAWRT chairperson Racheal Nakitare presented a paper on “Positioning Radio and Television in the Digital Age: Challenges and opportunities for women.” The conference was attended by media moguls, members of the academic fraternity, media owners and civil society. They were drawn from the East and Horn of Africa region.

3. As a follow-up to the theme of world press freedom 2011 – 21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers” IAWRT Kenya collaborated with African regional media hub with consulates and embassies in the five locations across the continent (Nairobi, Kenya; Cape town and Pretoria, South Africa; Harare, Zimbabwe and Dar es salaam, Tanzania) to host a panel discussion on may 9th on the barriers Women in the media in Africa face. The panel included Under secretary for public diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith McHale among other successful women in Africa who have been able to break the glass ceiling on their way to being leaders in the media industry. The connection let us down but the other countries benefitted from the initiative which we are all proud of.

4. IAWRT Kenya chapter held a bonding activity for the members on 21st May 2011. The members enjoyed the free brainstorming session on ways of revamping the organization. Members agreed to use their existing programmes / platforms to profile women and highlight their issues. They were challenged to be more proactive on the use of social media as a professional tool.

Conclusion

We have put in proposals to engage more on issues around the constitution and hopefully that will keep us busy the rest of the year.

Chapter meets Head of Secretariat and board member

The iawrt international treasurer who also heads the secretariat, accompanied by a board member from Thailand will stop over in Nairobi on their way from the Cameroon regional conference. This will give the chapter the opportunity to touch base and address all their financial matters. This will be done over a cup of tea.

The iawrt camerron chapter hosted the regional conference which coincided with the sixteen days of activism on violence against women. Kenya's "Stolen Innocence" was one of the 10 documentaries screened during the two hour live show hosted on Cameroon radio and television. The public was treated to an edutainment piece which show cased iawrt's global reach with documentaries produced in 10 member countries. the short documentaries, all reflecting on different scenerios where women are oppressed and exploited were laced in explosive music that send the cheering audience wild for two straight hours.

Profile and History

IAWRT Kenya was registered as an organization in January 2003 following an IAWRT Regional Workshop held in Kampala, Uganda, in 2002. Nine (9) Kenyan women broadcasters who attended the Kampala Regional Workshop upon return founded IAWRT Kenya. In November 2005, during the 31st IAWRT Biennial Conference held in Williamsburg, North Virginia, IAWRT Kenya received its charter status officially becoming a national chapter.

The Kenya chapter hosted the 2007 Biennial Conference and as a result, the chapter grew tremendously. The organization has 47 members and 18 very active members. In 2008, there were many activities. On Press Freedom Day the chapter held a workshop, supported by UNESCO, on the standards of women journalists in times of conflict. They have developed a publication on the IAWRT Kenyan strategic plan that involves the constitution of the organization and future opportunities.
