The News Manual by Peter Henshall and David Ingram published originally in the 1990s as a three-volume book, with financial help from UNESCO, is now available free online. Written in clear, concise English, the book helped to inform a generation of young and mid-career journalists studying and working across the Pacific. Now its 700 pages have been revised, updated and placed online as 74 fully-indexed chapters covering basic skills, advanced reporting and ethics & the law. There is a wealth of practical advice on how to perform most journalism tasks, from writing an intro to investigative reporting. It also hosts one of the largest and most extensive journalism and media glossaries on the Internet.
The News Manual online now also provides an ever-expanding interactive resource with exercises, topical discussions and a growing list of links to 100-plus professional sites around the world.
The News Manual online is free. No access codes, registrations or subscriptions are required. The site has no advertising or sponsorship and is independent of any organisation, institution, government or commercial interest. It is our labour of love for the profession we care deeply about.
The site has been built for simple download, display and navigation to embrace students and working journalists who may not have access to fast broadband. We hope you will visit The News Manual online at www.thenewsmanual.net and – if you like it – bring it to the attention of people you know who might benefit.
Finally, because the site itself will continue to be a work-in-progress, we would appreciate any feedback you might have, either through the Contact Us page or by writing directly to ingram@thenewsmanual.net.
