Journalism Studies is an international peer reviewed journal, published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis, which provides a forum for the critical discussion and study of journalism as both a subject of academic inquiry and an arena of professional practice. 24/03/2006 An upcoming training workshop in rural Pakistan will look at issues related to freedom of expression and local development. The Rural Media Network of Pakistan is organizing the workshop, scheduled for March 29 at the Ahmedpur Public Higher secondary School in Ahmedpur. The network is organizing the event in cooperation with the Nawa-I-AhmedpurSharqia newspaper. Ehsan Ahmed Sehar, convenor of the network and editor of the newspaper, says that the training will focus on news coverage of freedom of expression, local government, and development in rural areas. Participants also will view documentaries produced by the BBC and UNESCO on topics such as freedom of information, public education, and the slave trade. The Rural Media Network also recently launched an Urdu-language newsletter on freedom of expression, published for journalists and students outside Pakistan's major cities. With a theme of "Children and Development," the course aims to help broadcasters produce educational programs about or for children. Besides the training sessions in Hilversum, participants will travel around the Netherlands on project assignments, producing programs relevant to children. Working journalists worldwide can apply for the program, but the organizers say they prefer journalists from developing countries. The Radio Netherlands Training Center is organizing the course tostrengthen the skills of trainers, organizers and educators indeveloping countries. Participants will learn how to identify needs and develop new training programs. Application is open to citizens of all developing countries.
