For the first time in Bangladesh, fourteen (14) Community Radio Stations are going on air effective May 20, 2010. This hopes to provide livelihood related information to the rural communities in a vernacular language or in a way that’s easy to understand particularly on issues that confront the community associated with agriculture, education, health disaster, women and children issues, market price, services, among others.
The Ministry of Information of the Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh has been the key in approving the 14 initiators of this project, including Young Power in Action(YPSA) for Sitakunda, Chittagong, Nalta Community Hospital for Satkhira, LDRO for Bogra, BRAC for- Moulivi Bazer, Barandro Community Radio for -Naogaon, Proyas for -Chapai Nababgonj, CCD for - Rajshahi, Srizoni for - Jhinaidhah, EC Bangladesh for - Munsihigonj, MMC for - Barguna and RDRS for- Kurigram, Sundarban Community Radio for Koyra(Khulna), ACLAB for - Telnaf (Cox's Bazer) and Agriculture Information Servics(AIS) for - Community Rural Radio for Amtoli (Barguna)
This is a considerable success to Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) as it has been advocating with the government and with other organizations in promoting Community Radio as means to address critical social issues at the community level, i.e, poverty and social exclusion, empowerment of marginalized rural groups and catalyzing democratic process in decision making and ongoing development efforts.
