A strong supporter of women's rights in Afghanistan, Aina has facilitated the creation of a number of media initiatives produced by and for Afghan women, from the independent radio Afghan Women’s Voices, to the popular women’s magazine Malalai, to Afghanistan's first-ever all-female video production unit.

A network of women journalists in Africa has launched a new Web site for publishing and exchanging articles of interest to women on the continent. Organizers say the objective is to produce and disseminate information that focuses on news and the perspectives of African woman. Articles are available in French and English.
Handbook helps understand bird flu
The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a new resource to help journalists demystify the science behind avian influenza and other flu outbreaks. The "WHO Handbook for Journalists: Influenza Pandemic" is newly updated with information on the bird flu. Megge Miller, a scientist with the WHO office in Cambodia, told the Phnom Penh Post that the idea is to help journalists understand influenza terminology, so they are accurate and avoid causing panic. The guide should also help to standardize the language of journalists covering influenza outbreaks around the world. The handbook explains flu basics, such as: the difference between birdflu and the feared pandemic influenza; the history of past flu pandemics; information on drug and vaccine treatments; the phases of a pandemic; and how a community can prepare for one. Internet guide for journalists
UNESCO has published a training handbook for journalists of developing countries on the use of Internet for journalistic purposes. The book was published by the Thomson Foundation and Commonwealth Broadcasting Association. It was written by journalist-trainer Martin Huckerby, and is a resource (with a printed manual and a CD) designed for print and broadcast journalists and journalism students.
