Your name:
Tenzin Peldon

Location:
Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, Northern India

I was born in Dharamsala, a small town in Himachal Pradesh, Northern India on 14th June 1975.

I’m a senior reporter at Voice of Tibet. Although Tibet is my home country, I have never been there or seen it. My parents fled Tibet in 1959 when Communist China invaded Tibet and they eventually settled in Dharamsala. So I’m a second generation Tibetan working in exile for my home country.

Voice of Tibet is a Tibetan radio service that was established by 3 Norwegian Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in 1996. The editorial office is in Dharamsala and the head office is in Oslo, Norway.

Voice of Tibet airs 45-minute programmes daily in both Tibetan and Chinese to Tibet and China as well as India, Bhutan and Nepal.

Even though I had a huge interest in news broadcasting as a child, it was only by sheer chance that I became a reporter/broadcaster with Voice of Tibet. I didn't have any formal education in journalism before I joined Voice of Tibet. I am who I am today as result of what I learned from my colleagues and from my experience of working at this radio station for the past 8 years.

I became an IAWRT member in 1998, the year I joined Voice of Tibet. I remember attending the 28th conference of IAWRT in 1999, which was held in New Delhi, India. I was able to attend the conference because Delhi is quite nearby and there were no budgetary problems.

Since then I haven’t been able to attend any conferences but being an IAWRT member has opened the gate to the outside world. I’ve met so many women journalists from around the world and gained an insight into how they work. I was also able to show a video on our radio service and was able to speak about Tibet and its tragic situation. I know there are so many things that I can still learn from IAWRT and I hope to use these whenever the opportunity arises.

Voice of Tibet provides unbiased information and news to the Tibetans living under Chinese oppression in Tibet; it helps to preserve the threatened Tibetan culture; to educate the Tibetans internationally; to acknowledge human rights; to inform them about democracy and the democratic institutions of the Tibetan exiled community, and most important of all to act as a bridge between Tibetans in Tibet and Tibetans in exile.

My DREAM is to stretch my capabilities as a journalist even more and be able to say, "This is Tenzin Peldon for Voice of Tibet reporting from Lhasa" some good day!! (Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet)
