Filmmaking duo Nicky Newman and Beverley
Palesa Ditsie won the Vues d’Afrique/ OXFAM
prize for Best Women Directors in 2004 for
the film Simon & I, part of the
Steps For the Future series on HIV/AIDS.
Nicky attended the 21st Africa and Creole
Cinema Festival of Montreal in April while
Beverly completed the shooting for their
latest documentary, A Family Affair,
about
the musical Makhena family (screening on
Monday 18th of July 2005 on SABC TV 1).
Says Nicky: “The festival was really
interesting, especially meeting other
filmmakers from Africa and Canada and
seeing their latest work. OXFAM does such
important work and I was fortunate enough
to present our film to their Montreal and
Quebec offices.”
