MOLDOVA JOURNALISTS EASE THE TRANSITION

Republic of Moldova is a small country in SouthEastern Europe, between Romania and Ukraine. It is a newly independent country, but because of bad governance, now many European Financial Organizations and Media qualify Moldova as the poorest country in Europe.

As everybody knows, poverty is coming side by side with corruption and non-transparency that journalists in Moldova have a big mission to change the society mind.

In Moldava, TV and Radio stations women make the main part of engaged people, but their voices are not so loud now, because the main part of decisional jobs, as directors and editors in chief are offered to men. The opportunity for women in TV and Radio is to make good reportage and news, as well as a lot of them a working as reporters, presenters, DJ. They have an immensity of topics: from the hidden process of woman trafficking to the strong women initiatives in business and political issues. That many journalists try to promote women rights in electronic media, as Maia Metaxa, Radio reporter – a new member of IAWRT.

What we can say now, women journalists in Moldova became to be the most active category of women. The whole Europe heard about Moldovan TV Station strike Committee, lead by women journalists. After a few months of strike, Council of Europe discussed very strong the situation of journalists from the National TV station in Moldova and recommended to the government to make changes in the law, to transform the main TV Company in Moldova in a public one. I have to remark, that two of the most active member of strike committee are members of the IAWRT. Viorica Cucereanu and Corina Fusu participated to the meeting in Chisinau, organized by IAWRT last November. They screened a short documentary about the strike, told about their situation there, and convinced us they can fight for freedom of expression. The freedom of TV, rights of TV journalists and TV watchers in Moldova were discussed again on 28 January at the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe. We can change our society with the help of European community, and we are proud that it done by our effort and our voices, voices of the newest members of IAWRT.
