55th Commission on the Status of Women Four members of the Board (Olya Booyar, Elizabeth Roxas, Madeleine Memb and Supattra Limpabandhu) were able to attend the 55th Annual Meeting of the CSW in February 2011. In collaboration with IAWRT USA Chapter, it mounted a successful side event entitled, ‘Engendering Technologies: Women Take Charge’ on 24 February 2011. With the theme “Ways of Seeing: Rhetoric and Reality”, this articulated through multiple lenses the lives, events and concerns of our layered society and reflect how women go beyond manifestation to question and express new forms and contents. Newsletter Publication APRIL - JUNE 1st Board Teleconference Asia Media Summit An IAWRT delegation was present at the Asia Media Summit on 24-25 May 2011 in Hanoi, Vietnam. With IAWRT’s involvement in the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU)/ Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Gender Guidelines for Public Broadcasters project and in recognition of its expertise and credentials in the area of gender representation in media, the project has gathered a vote of confidence in getting this to the next level. The identified pilot group comprises: Thailand Broadcasting Services, Voice of Vietnam, Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation, Philippines Broadcasting Service, Radio & TV Malaysia and Young Asia TV in Sri Lanka. IAWRT members head four of the six pilots. Negotiations with IPPTAR and ABU On behalf of the IAWRT Board, the Secretariat was tasked to negotiate with Tun Abdul Razak Institute of Broadcasting and Information (PPTAR) and Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) , arrangements for hosting the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference that will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 21-24 November 2011. JULY - SEPTEMBER 3rd Board Teleconference Implementation Workshop for the Broadcasting For All: Focus on Gender Project An implementation workshop has been conducted with IPPTAR, ABU, FES and IAWRT among six (6) pilot broadcasting organization, of which four are IAWRT members, to develop an action plan for this project. Terms of Reference, final arrangements and other details have been firmed up with IPPTAR and ABU for the conduct of the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference. Annual Project Audit Racheal Nakitare and Gerd Inger conducted the project audit of the FGM project on second of week of September. Newsletter Publication OCTOBER - DECEMBER 4th Board Teleconference Annual Project Audit Olya Booyar and Gerd Inger conducted the project audit of the Secretariat on the first week of October while for two weeks in India in November, Anti-trafficking and Half-Widows projects were audited. 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference Revolving its theme, “New Paradigms; Media Women Responding to Change”, over 60 international and 30 local participants gathered for the 34th IAWRT Biennial Conference in Kuala Lumpur to discuss media's pressing role in obliterating clichéd portrayals of women in various sectors through the social media which is now seen as a powerful venue to bring issues across terrains not covered by the traditional media. This has also been a venue for celebrating the 60th year of IAWRT paying tribute its great women presidents since its inception. Five (5) of the fifteen (15) presidents came to grace this celebration with exhibit, audio-visual production and information materials distributed to participants. Members’ Meeting A new set of IAWRT Board has been elected during its Members' Meeting on 24 November 2011 at Angkasapuri, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For the first time in the history of IAWRT that an African takes on the leadership in the name of Racheal Nakitare from Kenya, previously the Vice President. The newly elected board, with geographical representation from around the globe, has assumed its post and will serve IAWRT membership from 2011 to 2013, or up to the next Biennial Conference of the organization.
